What it's for (Indications)
- Sitagliptin + Metformin is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
- It can be used as monotherapy for type 2 diabetes inadequately controlled by metformin, diet, and exercise.
- It is also used as dual therapy along with metformin or a glitazone when patients respond inadequately to diet, exercise, and either metformin or a glitazone, or in combination with sulfonylureas in patients for whom metformin is contraindicated or who do not respond adequately to sulfonylureas alone.
- Furthermore, it can be used as triple therapy with metformin and a sulfonylurea or glitazone for type 2 diabetes inadequately controlled by dual therapy, and with or without metformin in patients who respond inadequately to diet, exercise, and insulin.

Common Side Effects
- Possible side effects include upper respiratory infections, headache, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, joint pain, dizziness, gastrointestinal disturbances, flatulence, swelling, and influenza-like symptoms.
- More serious, though rare, adverse events can include pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), severe allergic reactions (including Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and bullous pemphigoid), and hypoglycemia (low glucose levels).
- Osteoarthritis (weak bones) has also been reported.
